Duties of the Department

The primary function of the equalization department is to establish an estimate of true cash value for each class of property in each township and city throughout the county, as a starting base for the following year’s equalization, thus assisting the county board of commissioners in their statutory duty of equalizing the county.

The equalization department also furnishes assistance to the local assessing officers in the performance of the duties imposed by State statute, including but not limited to the maintenance of accurate property descriptions; the discovery, listing, and valuation of properties for tax purposes; and the development and use of uniform valuation standards and techniques.

The equalization department has on file for public inspection copies of the current and past two years assessment rolls, section maps, Subdivision plats, copies of recorded surveys, recent sale data, and assessment/ state equalized/ taxable value information.
